For this episode of Pen of the Avatar, Stephen focus on Crypts and things you would find in a crypt. But first, he lead things off with the first user submitted piece of concept art from the Hairy Man. Interesting he decided to show off his sacks. Burlap sacks that is. Sacks for flour, rice and other grains. Stephen gave a quick critique with comments on what to watch out for when you mirror images within an object as well as to make sure the objects lay flat, can be stacked and lean against the wall. Since these are grains, they should mold themselves to the contours of whatever they rest against. But overall, these are great items, will make their way into the game and I dare say we will see them in the FireLotus Tavern.

Next up was the Lich, his dungeon and his bone chair. Stephen showed off the completed piece including changes to perspective and some very nice highlights that give the chair real depth. From there he showed how the chair would placed in the environment, where the player would enter and how the lines and angles would direct the play of the game.

He even went so far as to improvise and added a fire in front of the bone chair and showed how ambient light would affect the room. Quite honestly it was mesmerizing. To watch Stephen build and create is really amazing. You can hear the keyboard clicking and the mouse flies across the screen in almost seemingly random patterns. But right before your eyes, those wild mouse movements turn into amazing pieces with depth and color.

And Stephen finished off the house with a special preview of the completed chair, complete with Boss Character, as he sits and broods waiting for the Avatar. It was also suggested you bring some “roadies” along so you can haul that chair back to your house when you win this epic boss showdown!
