Underworld Ascendant

image So there it is! Underworld Ascendant is fully funded and then some! Not only is the base game with Windows, Lunix and Mac support funded, but multiple stretch goals were achieved including another new area, the Resonant Caves. How fantastic!

So this means we get the base game with Windows, Mac and Linux support, which is great. Plus we get new areas of the Underswamp and the Resonant Caves. There is the Tracy Hickman novel. The race of Lizardmen. The ability to have Companions. And finally, more detailed and exciting music and effects.

So yes, there will be early access, screenshots, adventures, quest journals, mistakes and blunders. It’s going to be glorious! So stick around, we’re gonna have some fun with this!

Oh my goodness, will you look at this? Whilst I slumbered, the total goal for Underworld Ascendant has passed through the Lizardmen stretch goal and is working it’s way to toward Companion Creatures. This is phenomenal news! But there is an exciting prize halfway to the finish line of the next stretch goal. It looks like Enhanced Music and an titillating new area called the Necrotic Graveyard is at our fingertips. I mean, who doesn’t want to go into the Underworld and pay a visit to the Necrotic Graveyard? What could possibly go wrong in a place like that? I’m sure it’s a lovely place to sit a spell and contemplate the adventures of the day. If there is a day, it is the Underworld after all.

I have to admit, things looked a little sluggish in those early days. Underworld burst onto the scene, then like most projects hit the middle lull. Oh but It’s full steam ahead now! Lots of new backers have come on board and multiple stretch goals have been unlocked.

I think we’re looking at an incredibly exciting game here. I know I keep going back to it, but this reminds me of the excitement I felt over getting and playing the original Diablo. That single player game was absolutely stunning! I was amazed at the graphics, the music, the atmosphere and all the exploration and creatures. Look back, that seems like a minor experience compared to what’s coming in the Underworld.

With the Companion Creature feature added to the game, players will be able to have a faithful little buddy tag along on their adventures. Companions might be useful in a fight, or in boosting skills and abilities, but they can also help the player in other unexpected ways.

Enhanced Music is also part of this Stretch Goal.  The music of the original Underworld games are memorable even to this day, and now we will be able to create music to inspire the next generation of CRPG gamers!

In addition when we get to $775,000, halfway through the Stretch Goal, we will build in the Stygian Abyss a new area, the Necrotic Graveyard. This dark and foreboding locale seems to hold an allure for the various monsters and creatures of the Stygian Abyss who, upon arriving at the graveyard, pass away only to be reanimated as the undead.

Wow, the excitement builds as we hit the last 48 hours of the Kickstarter campaign for Underworld Ascendant. Not only has the game been fully funded with room to spare, it’s pushed through a couple of the stretch goals. The Underswamp will be added and we have set into motion another Tracy Hickman novel. Not only that, we are within striking distance of the Lizardmen, a new race to be added to the game. And speaking of added to the game, several new digital items have been added such as Chattering Bart (and his counterpart Chattering Bertha in SotA), shields, faction banners and t-shirts. And there’s plenty of fun to be had at each pledge level with digital copies of the game, alpha access, design sessions, signed boxes, parchments, art and behind the scenes videos.

But the real fun is about to begin. The underworld has been raised and we will forge ahead with sculpting and creating a fantastic adventure game. Shroud of the Avatar is a great world with lots of adventure and interaction. Underworld should shape up to be a fantastic experience that is ever changing and dynamic. From the videos and descriptions, these guys want this world to be alive and vibrant, not just some game you farm over and over again. It seems like it will react and change. And just because something worked the first time doesn’t mean it will work the second time.

What lies beyond the Underworld? Who knows, but my pledge is locked in, the game has been funded, the ideas and art are flowing and the community has shown some great support. Over 12,000 people think this is going to be a great game.

In mere hours we will put this exciting phase behind us and get down to the real work. I can’t wait to see the first build!

I’m absolutely thrilled that Underworld Ascendant has crossed over the required pledge amount and has a nice buffer to work with! I’m sure I’m not quite as excited as the devs themselves, but it’s pretty exciting! This means, barring some sort of tragic set of circumstances, the game is a Go and those of us wanting a single player Ultima style game will get one.

But the ride isn’t over yet. There are still 5 days left to pledge and the stretch goal of getting an Underworld Ascendant novel written by Tracy Hickman. Now, we saw what happened with Blade of the Avatar. Not only did we get the book in serialized form and not only did it give us some great story for New Britannia, but the original novel is going to be expanded and there will be 2 additional novels in the set. I speak for no one when I say this and this is purely me talking out my @#$, but wouldn’t it be amazing if we were able to fund an Underworld novel that ended up going the same route? It would boggle the mind to get 2 trilogies out of this world and this set of games. No one is saying that it will, could, might or even should happen, but we could at least get one novel out of the deal. With just a little more funding we could get there.

And besides, we need to give that Tracy guy something to work on. I mean look at him. All he does is spend his days at home in his home office, sitting amongst all those papers staring out the window waiting for something to happen. We need to give him some work so he doesn’t get bored!! Smile

So, to that end, I bumped up my pledge just to keep that buffer going. I would love to get on that tier where you get all the Otherside Games released in the next decade, but we have to tone it down a bit. But hey, every little bit helps!

Anyway, this is great news and this is going to be another fantastic project to be a part of! And yes, I plan to get just as lost in the Underworld as I do in Novia. Make no mistake about it!

Probably even more so since I’ll have no one to save me…

If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to jump in and support Underworld Ascendant. It looks like this is going to be a great game full of some amazing technology and great game play. If you haven’t already looked at the Kickstarter site, there are plenty of videos to get a behind the scenes look at what the developers are planning and where they want to take the game. Their vision sounds so exciting and really makes me think of how great the old single player Ultima games were. But the new Underworld will go even further.

Although the details haven’t been completely worked out, Underworld and Shroud of the Avatar will share some ties and they will most likely share some of the same backstory.

The game is so close to being funded, but needs just a little more to make it over the top. There’s two weeks left and this is the slack time. There is usually a big lull in pledges before the final couple of days and the excitement builds again. However, there’s no reason to hold back. There are some great stretch goals to reach and some nice pledge tiers on offer.

I’m already invested in this game as well and can’t wait to see it get developed. Shroud of the Avatar is looking great and is only going to get better, but I have to say, my true love is still the single player adventure so I desperately hope this game succeeds. These guys did so much work to wrestle Ultima out of the hands of EA, we can’t let them down! 🙂

Update: Tracy Hickman has come on board to write a novel for Underworld Ascendant!

We will need the help of our Backers to make this happen. Tracy’s novel is being rolled into our first $750,000 stretch goal. Let’s bring Tracy aboard!

Tracy’s talents as a fantasy author, together with his deep experience with gaming and close collaboration on Shroud of the Avatar, a world connected to ours, make him ideally suited to write the Underworld Ascendant novel. The novel is going to be set several generations before the game takes place, and tell the story of how a band of Dark Elves from the land of the Shroud of the Avatar passed through a magic portal to make an exodus into the Stygian Abyss. It will tell of their trials in this harsh and dangerous underworld, and of how they carved out a place for themselves.

The other exciting news is that both Mac and Linux clients will be supported in the base funding.

So… we have decided to roll Mac and Linux support into the base funding goal.
