There seems to be no limit to the lands I’ll travel to, the sewer I’ll climb down, the ships I’ll attempt to board, the bears I will slay or the games I’ll support. We are in the opening hours of a new Kickstarter campaign for The Bard’s Tale and I’m on board. I’m sure we all remember the original Bard’s Tale from the days when we were playing Ultima. Recently, there was an iOS edition, which I also have a copy of, but let’s get down to business and make a desktop sequel shall we?

The details of the game seem quite exciting. First thing to note, this will be a single player game, so no housing, wild decorations or random battles in the street. But there will be dungeons! Dungeons of such a diabolical nature! Well, let’s hope they’re diabolical. I mean, that is the nature of a dungeon isn’t it?

Anyway, it’s also going to be available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Nice to see more platforms supported.

There are plenty of rewards available and you can simply buy the game for a really low price, or get a whole slew of digital content added. You can get boxed sets, signatures, cloth maps and even copies of other games to keep you occupied until Bard’s Tale is released. And yes, there is Beta access to be had.

This sounds like a fun project to support so jump over to Kickstarter and put in a small pledge. This project is moving right along and I have no doubt it will be funded with plenty of room to spare. But don’t hold out until the end, that’s for sissies. Jump in, headlong, devil may care, fists full of cash at the ready!!

image Wow, like I said, it’s a good time to be a fan of RPG’s. Dungeons of Aledorn is another game I came across that involves the old school D&D rules, party building, combat, multiple player classes and exploration. There is even a playable demo you can download so you can take it for a spin. It looks like there will be a lot to explore, plenty of quests and a slew of combat. A bit of something for everyone.

From reading through the details this sounds very similar to the old style Ultima and Bard’s Tale games. There is even this little description which should take a lot of players back:

You may give various assignments to your party members during the camping in the open via a complex (but easy to use) time management schedule. Your characters may, for example, meditate, hunt, cook, repair and tinker, collect plants and mushrooms, brew potions, stand guard, etc. (oh, and sleeping might sometimes be quite a good idea). If you’re not interested in this kind of stuff, you may simply avoid this detailed management by setting a lower difficulty level or using the automatic camping function.

It looks like this Kickstarter just recently got underway and the level of entry is very low, which is really exciting. You can buy a copy of the game for a mere $15. If you want beta access, that’s only $45. If you want signed copies of the physical box and map, there are options for that as well.

Also in the good news category, Dungeons of Aledorn will be available for Windows, Mac and Linux! Another huge win for multiple platform support!

image You know, it’s a good time to be a fan of Adventure games (RPGs). First, we have Shroud of the Avatar for the multiplayer (and single player) adventuring crowd, and then Underworld Ascendant for the single player crowd. Now, a new entry has appeared, Seven Dragon Saga which uses Turn Based mechanics and a party for combat and exploration.

As you read in the latest SotA update, they made reference to Seven Dragon and how it’s a regroup of developers from the original SSI team. I was a fan of those games back in the day and quite enjoy turned based combat. Your party formation can be just as important as their skills. And it’s a nice change from a straight hack and slash philosophy.

A couple days have passed and the new team at Tactical Simulations Interactive (TSI) have put together some nice QA sessions, offered more details on classes and combat, and have more information on how magic will work for different styles of characters.

All right my friends, you have my interest.

Even though they are “mockups” the combat looks interesting and the additional details provided make me like this game. As such, I will be putting support into this game as well. Now all I have to do is find time to play them all!

For a mere $25, you can show your support and get a copy of the game when it’s finished. If you want beta access, well, that will cost a bit more. I have to say, I’m not a huge fan of their tier structure and the rewards being offered. However, that makes me think they have the design fleshed out and know which way they want to take the game and don’t want to get “derailed” by the mountain of user input they would receive. Community feedback is great, but you can have too much of a good thing.

So, yes, I’m on board as a supporter of Seven Dragon Saga. Like the other games, I think this will be a lot of fun. Not just to play when it’s done, but to see develop. I enjoy watching a game take shape and see it go from framework to final product.

If you’re a fan of the D&D turn based style of play, this is worth checking out. The Kickstarter project is underway! We still have a way to go before reaching the funding goal, but I have a feeling this will get some good support as we move forward.

image So there it is! Underworld Ascendant is fully funded and then some! Not only is the base game with Windows, Lunix and Mac support funded, but multiple stretch goals were achieved including another new area, the Resonant Caves. How fantastic!

So this means we get the base game with Windows, Mac and Linux support, which is great. Plus we get new areas of the Underswamp and the Resonant Caves. There is the Tracy Hickman novel. The race of Lizardmen. The ability to have Companions. And finally, more detailed and exciting music and effects.

So yes, there will be early access, screenshots, adventures, quest journals, mistakes and blunders. It’s going to be glorious! So stick around, we’re gonna have some fun with this!

Oh my goodness, will you look at this? Whilst I slumbered, the total goal for Underworld Ascendant has passed through the Lizardmen stretch goal and is working it’s way to toward Companion Creatures. This is phenomenal news! But there is an exciting prize halfway to the finish line of the next stretch goal. It looks like Enhanced Music and an titillating new area called the Necrotic Graveyard is at our fingertips. I mean, who doesn’t want to go into the Underworld and pay a visit to the Necrotic Graveyard? What could possibly go wrong in a place like that? I’m sure it’s a lovely place to sit a spell and contemplate the adventures of the day. If there is a day, it is the Underworld after all.

I have to admit, things looked a little sluggish in those early days. Underworld burst onto the scene, then like most projects hit the middle lull. Oh but It’s full steam ahead now! Lots of new backers have come on board and multiple stretch goals have been unlocked.

I think we’re looking at an incredibly exciting game here. I know I keep going back to it, but this reminds me of the excitement I felt over getting and playing the original Diablo. That single player game was absolutely stunning! I was amazed at the graphics, the music, the atmosphere and all the exploration and creatures. Look back, that seems like a minor experience compared to what’s coming in the Underworld.

With the Companion Creature feature added to the game, players will be able to have a faithful little buddy tag along on their adventures. Companions might be useful in a fight, or in boosting skills and abilities, but they can also help the player in other unexpected ways.

Enhanced Music is also part of this Stretch Goal.  The music of the original Underworld games are memorable even to this day, and now we will be able to create music to inspire the next generation of CRPG gamers!

In addition when we get to $775,000, halfway through the Stretch Goal, we will build in the Stygian Abyss a new area, the Necrotic Graveyard. This dark and foreboding locale seems to hold an allure for the various monsters and creatures of the Stygian Abyss who, upon arriving at the graveyard, pass away only to be reanimated as the undead.
