Ultima

Ultima isn’t just inspiring people on the desktop, there are big fans of the game on the tablet platform as well. I came across this yesterday and it looks like a whole lot of fun. It’s an RPG called Ember and the developer says one of the main inspirations was Ultima VII.

The game is scheduled to come out later this year, but the screenshots look really impressive and the gameplay sounds outstanding. There is supposed to be full interactivity, day and night cycles, a complete skill tree, 70 quests and even crafting. Is this pocket SotA?

I will have to keep an eye on this one. If it’s anything like the Ultima series, I will have to play it. I’m sure I can fall down a mine shaft, get mauled by a bear and get stabbed in the backside in a portable game just as easily as I can in a full size one!

The top inspiration is a very old and classic PC game that we hold near and dear to us – Ultima VII: The Black Gate. Ultima VII came out in 1992 and was built to run on computers with less RAM and processing power than most of today’s modern kitchen appliances! Despite that, the game is regarded as one of the finest RPGs with its deep story, interesting characters, and fully functional world. In fact, this interactivity pertains to one of Ember‘s main pillars: to maintain a fully-simulated RPG world with day and night cycles, lively NPCs with daily schedules, and tons of responsive objects that would behave as a player would expect of them. We figured if this level of interaction could be achieved on a computer with 4 MB of RAM, then we should be able to do it on a tablet!

Once again the entire Ultima Collection can be had for $14. Good Old Games – gog.com is running another sale of classic games and once again the entire Ultima collection is on sale. This includes Ultima 1-9 as well as Ultima Underworld 1-2. Also, as stated in the comments and I got the same thing, you also get the Worlds of Ultima as a bonus. I believe that’s the entire Ultima collection for less than $15. I’ve spent more on a burger and fries at Five Guys! And the burger didn’t last nearly as long as this will!

I bought this collection before, but if you missed it and just want to relive those moments, here’s another chance. Plus, there’s some other pretty sweet games in the collection like Wing Commander, Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate Wars and Populous. Each one comes in at just $2.39, which is the traditional price of an iPad game. You really can’t beat those prices. You also get a free copy of The Witcher Enhanced Edition with each purchase.

Anyway, just passing along the deal and it only lasts through the weekend. If you want the games don’t wait too long. What could be better than passing a night slaying monsters in the world of Ultima and Britannia?

For many of us Ultima IV may be the defining game in the Ultima series. It was that game that introduced the Virtues, gave us the ability to adventure with a party, introduced reagents, expanded the world we could explore and set the path all the other Ultimas would follow.

I distinctly remember playing this game, for hours, on both Apple and Commodore machines. To put it mildly, it was amazing! It was a bright and colorful full of animation, a huge area to explore, a slew of weapons, spells, runes, virtues, shrines, resting to heal your party and an almost endless series of creatures to battle against. There was no Internet, no multiplayer, no in-game purchases to make you powerful, you had to earn everything you got. And it was fantastic!

I mentioned before that Ultima was the game I wanted most to be ported over to the iPad. Well, the day is here. Using an emulator, the folks at Elite Systems have ported Ultima IV over and brought it to the smaller screen. If you recall, Ultima IV is actually a free download. Electronic Arts has made the game available for some time now and you can download it from Good Old Games (gog.com). But this is a portable version, you can take it anywhere and show off the classic Ultima goodness to your friends and co-workers.

I’ve just started the small download and can’t wait to give it a try. Considering the game is free with no in-app purchases or other ways to steal your gold, I can’t see a reason not to get this. Judging from the screen shots, it looks just the same as it did when it was new. Some say the graphics looks dated, I say they look just like they should!

If you don’t have the complete Ultima series yet, you have another opportunity to grab it for an incredibly cheap price. You can get the entire Ultima collection, which includes Ultima 1-9 and the Ultima Underworld series for 75% off. That’s all 11 games for a mere $8.96. I don’t think you can argue this genre changing series for less than $10. This includes the incredible Ultima 3 and 4, as well as the Ultima 7 and even Ultima 7. I haven’t played several games in this series and thought it was a great deal when it was $14. This is even less!

See how the whole series started and unlock the mysteries of the Virtues, discover the Shrines, meet Iolo, Dupree and Shimano and see how it all begin and be reminded of how it all ended. Shroud of the Avatar may not be the sequel to this series, but it certainly has it’s roots in this series.
